Dear Jaco,

Captain Watson has been granted bail, but he cannot leave Germany and the extradition process is proceeding! For the past week, we have called upon you to reach out and contact Germany's Federal Minister of Justice and Minister of Foreign Affairs to secure the captain's release from this politically motivated case. The world is mobilizing to #FreePaulWatson. Our voices are being heard, but we must keep the pressure on!

This Wednesday, May 23rd, we are calling upon all supporters of Captain Paul Watson to go to the nearest German embassy or consulate between 1100 and 1300 hours (local time) to protest his unjust arrest and impending extradition. Organize or join the cacophony of voices and demand Captain Paul Watson's freedom!

This international day of protest coincides with the Costa Rican President's visit to Germany. Make your voice be heard! Be respectful in your conduct and communications, but keep the pressure on. With your help, we can persuade the President of Costa Rica, the German Chancellor, and the Honorable Ministers of Germany to safeguard Captain Watson's human rights by not bowing to bogus accusations of shark fin poachers who are nothing more than common criminals.

For the oceans,

Sea Shepherd HQ

P.S. Remember — show solidarity and assemble at your closest German embassy or consulate this coming Wednesday between 1100 and 1300 hours (local time). Learn more...

We have updated our website as of this morning with new information regarding Paul's case.

Again, I thank you and wish you the best.

German Prosecutor’s Late Motion Gives German Ministers More Time to Free Captain Paul Watson!

Photo: Barbara VeigaSea Shepherd expected news on the fate of Captain Paul Watson to be announced yesterday by the German Higher Regional Court in Frankfurt but as hours passed on, no word was received from the general public prosecutor until close of business hours.  At 1800 hrs, the general public prosecutor finally submitted his motion for a preliminary extradition arrest warrant against Captain Paul Watson.  The late filing of this motion, coupled with a German bank holiday today, has given Captain Paul Watson’s supporters and allies until this Friday to appeal to German Federal Minister of Justice Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Guido Westerwelle’s standards for International Human Rights.

Lead legal counsel for Captain Paul Watson, Oliver Wallasch, had this to say about the general public prosecutor’s motion on Wednesday:

“Absolutely unusual – I never had this experience in all my practice in cross border cases – the fact that the public prosecutor stated, that the German Ministry of Justice and the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs have the power to stop the extradition procedure on political reasons.”

Thus the keys to Captain Paul Watson’s freedom are in the hands of the Honorable Minister of Justice and the Honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs. We therefore ask all supporters of Captain Paul Watson to immediately contact the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Foreign Affairs to ask them to end the unjust and politically-motivated extradition of Captain Paul Watson before a panel of judges decides Captain Paul Watson’s fate on Friday.

For days, Sea Shepherd supporters from Germany and around the world have expressed their concerns about the political nature of this extradition, as well as their concern for the safety of Captain Paul Watson, to Federal Minister of Justice Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger. Given the motion made by the general public prosecutor, it is now time to also focus attention on Minster of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Guido Westerwelle. Either Minister (or both Ministers) can take the action that Interpol has already taken and acknowledge that the case against Captain Paul Watson is politically-motivated and is a violation of Captain Paul Watson’s human rights.

Should the Honorable Ministers fail to put the brakes on the persecution of Captain Paul Watson, the extradition process will proceed and Costa Rica will have a maximum of 90 days, from the time that he was arrested, to put forward their bogus case for extradition. During this time, Captain Paul Watson would remain isolated in prison, awaiting an extradition that would be tantamount to a death sentence.

The Taiwanese Shark Fin Mafia has had a $20,000 bounty on his head for years.  We know the arm of the Taiwanese Shark Finning Mafia reaches not just to the illegal fishing industry in Costa Rica, but also to the prison system there. Sea Shepherd fears that not only would Captain Paul Watson not receive a fair trial in Costa Rica, but he would likely not survive jail long enough to see the inside of a court room.

This is our final effort to ask the Honorable Ministers to intervene before the extradition process officially begins.  We only have hours to change the minds of the German officials who can make a difference and not only save the life of Captain Paul Watson, but also save the lives of whales, dolphins, seals, and fish that he has spent his life courageously defending.

While visiting Captain Paul Watson in prison, Ship Operations Officer, Peter Hammarstedt and Director of Intelligence and Investigations, Scott West were able to obtain a handwritten note from Captain Paul Watson to his supporters, which you can read at the bottom of this article.

Fwd: Sea Shepherd S.O.S. - Captain Watson in danger of extradition to Costa Rica

Click here if you are having trouble viewing this page

Dear Jaco,

Captain Watson has been in a German prison since Sunday and is in danger of being extradited to Costa Rica where we fear for his safety from the Shark Fin Mafia and an unfair, politically motivated trial!

When we last wrote you, we had only 15 hours to make our case to the German Federal Minister of Justice, who could throw this whole case out and release Captain Watson, but a stroke of luck has come our way. There was a delay in filing by the general public prosecutor on Wednesday. The delay coupled with Thursday being a bank holiday in Germany has given Captain Watson's supporters until this Friday to appeal to Federal Minister of Justice and the Minister of Foreign Affairs to end the unjust and politically motivated extradition of our fearless leader.

Please act now! Call, email, and fax the Honorable Ministers and politely ask them to intervene before the extradition process officially begins. If you have already written or called, please do so again! We only have hours to change the minds of the German officials who can make a difference and do something, not only to save the life of Captain Watson, but also to save the lives of the whales, dolphins, seals, and fish that he has spent his life courageously defending.

For the oceans,

Sea Shepherd HQ

P.S. Read the latest update on Captain Watson's situation, including a hand-written note from the Captain to his supporters, and get contact information for the Honorable Ministers who have the power to #FreePaulWatson.

Dear Jaco,

All hands on deck! Captain Paul Watson has been arrested in Germany and may be extradited to Costa Rica where he will face a politically motivated, unfair trial — unless you help!

We have 15 hours to make our case to Germany's Federal Minister of Justice. Her name is Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger. She is the only person in the world who can step in to overturn the decision of the lower courts in Germany and keep Captain Watson from being extradited to Costa Rica. If she does not make this decision in the next 15 hours, Captain Watson will be held in jail in Germany for 90 days pending an appeal process prior to his extradition.

We cannot allow Captain Watson to be extradited to Costa Rica or be held in a German prison for 90 days. He has too much work to do for the oceans!

Please be respectful in your communications and contact the Federal Minister of Justice.

Sea Shepherd has many upcoming hurdles to face — in the water and in the courtroom. We will not stand down in the face of corruption and greed. In addition to contacting the Federal Minister of Justice, please make a donation to keep us afloat. We depend on you.

For the oceans,

Sea Shepherd HQ

P.S. We have written a sample letter and given you the Minister's contact information on our website. Don't delay. Your help is needed now to #FreePaulWatson.
